Fall into Winter Decorating Ideas

I’m all about enjoying the fa la la of the holidays as much as possible, which means I don’t want to spend more time and energy decking the halls between Thanksgiving and Christmas than I spend celebrating.

Plan ahead with double-duty decorations

I’ve discovered that by planning ahead and choosing decorations that serve double-duty, the transition between fall and winter goes much smoother. You can save money too, and also get some new, inspiring ideas when you look at your space with a different goal in mind.

Rethink your colors

Choosing a less traditional color is a great start. Royal blue will pair nicely with fall decor like orange pumpkins, yellow, green and white gourds and multicolored calico corn. But blues and purples also look beautiful with the metallic gold, bronze and silver Christmas colors.

What about winter white—a sophisticated neutral canvas. If you really like the idea of reds and greens for Christmas, think about adding a little twist like a mint green or cranberry.

All about the plaids

Plaids are perfect for fall and winter decor because they symbolize warmth, and there are so many color choices. Picture a gold and Burgundy plaid that you tie around a corn stalk bundle for fall and for a bow on your door wreath. That same plaid can be used for a Christmas tree skirt, to wrap around your staircase banister and for a throw and matching pillows for the living room sofa.

Tablescape inspiration

There’s so much you can do to make a table look beautiful for holidays. Consider investing in a reversible tablecloth that has a different look—color and/or pattern—on each side. It’s always great to have two different options. A table runner or placemats are the perfect way to make a statement on a beautiful wooden table you don’t want to completely cover. Table runners can be reversible as well.

As you know, fabric is my specialty, so I can help you with some great ideas for tablecloths, pillows and linens too.

These are just a few fall to winter decorating ideas. You’ll find a lot more in my October newsletter. For now, have fun experimenting and send me your favorite ideas at [email protected].

Happy decorating!
