A few years back, these things might have felt like luxuries. Now, most of us wouldn’t want to live without them.
I feel the same way about motorized window treatments.
One of the questions I hear most often during consultations is, “Do I really need motorized shades?” It’s usually followed by questions about the cost, the batteries, or what happens if the motor stops working.
After more than 25 years helping homeowners throughout the Raleigh area choose custom window treatments, I completely understand those concerns. Motorization isn’t the right choice for every window or every budget, but the technology has come a long way over the years. Many of the worries people have today are based on older systems that aren’t an issue anymore.

I have a motorized shade in my own home that’s programmed to open in the morning and close in the evening. I rarely even think about it anymore. It quietly does its job every day, and I only need to recharge the battery about every eight or nine months.
It’s become one of those little conveniences that makes life easier. The best part, it even does it while I am on vacation!
Motorization is especially popular for:
- Hard-to-reach windows
- Large walls of windows
- Tall foyer windows
- Home offices where glare makes it difficult to see a computer screen
- Bedrooms where you’d like to wake up with natural light
- Homes with beautiful afternoon sun that also brings heat and UV rays
Sometimes It’s More Than a Convenience
While convenience is certainly a big benefit, sometimes motorization solves a problem that can’t be solved another way.
One of my clients has several shades high above a staircase. Every afternoon, the sun pours into their home, so they adjust those shades daily to control the heat and glare. Without motorization, reaching those windows would have been difficult and unsafe.
For them, motorization wasn’t a luxury. It was the perfect solution.
Another benefit people often overlook is protecting their home. Setting shades to close during the hottest part of the day helps keep out heat and protects your floors, artwork, furniture, and fabrics from harmful UV rays.
It is also a security issue. If you are on vacation, the shades will still open and close on the set schedule, making it appear as if you are home.
The best part? You don’t have to remember to do it. Your shades follow the schedule you have set.
What About Child and Pet Safety?
Due to new safety standards, manufacturers have eliminated exposed, dangling cords from today’s window treatments, making them much safer for homes with young children and pets.
In some cases, motorization is simply the best solution for hard-to-reach windows. Whether it’s a tall foyer window, a stairway, or a large wall of windows, motorization allows you to operate your shades safely and conveniently with the touch of a button.
Let’s Talk About the Concerns
“I’m not very tech-savvy.”
This is probably the biggest misconception I hear.
Most motorized systems are incredibly easy to use. You can operate them with a handheld remote, a wall switch, an app on your phone, or even your voice if they’re connected to a smart home system.
In reality, many of my clients press one button. They don’t spend time learning complicated technology because there isn’t much to learn.
If you can use your TV remote, you can use motorized shades.
“How often do I have to charge the batteries?”
Not nearly as often as people think.
Most rechargeable motors only need charging every several months, depending on how frequently the shades are used. As I mentioned, mine only need attention about every eight or nine months.
If you’re building a new home or remodeling, hardwired options are also available.
“What if something breaks?”
This is probably the question I’m asked most often.
The truth is, any mechanical system might need service now and then, whether it’s manual or motorized. The good news is that today’s products are made to last for years, and quality motors are tested for thousands of uses and come with strong warranties.
In my experience, service calls for motorized products happen much less often than most people think.
Is Motorization Right for You?
Motorization might be a great choice if you:
- Have tall, oversized, or hard-to-reach windows.

But if you have just a few easy-to-reach windows that rarely need adjusting, manual operation may be the best choice.
