A Southern Tradition

When I think of plantation shutters, I have a vision of the 1800’s style southern plantation with large trees covered in Spanish moss framing the structure. Interior plantation shutters provide assurance, confidence, security, and elegance to your home they are timeless and classic. The appeal of plantation shutters stems from the fact that they offer a traditional look and have an elegant and clean appearance on both the interior and exterior. They are appropriate for a wide variety of styles with no risk of falling out of fashion. They are conducive to traditional, transitional, country, contemporary, modern and even Asian interior design. Plantation shutters provide texture that enhances the interior whether they expose a handsome variegated wood grain through a stained finish or a satiny smooth paint finish.

Today, wood shutters are one of the most eco-friendly window treatments available. Shutters are typically made out of basswood, a lightweight, sustainably harvested hardwood that does not warp, is naturally low in sap content and is recyclable, biodegradable and renewable. Many shutter manufacturers have even adopted some green practices. For example, instead of using dangerous lacquer-based paints, environmentally friendly water-based paints and stains are used. Also, wood scraps and sawdust are recycled or used to produce energy.

Providing insulation during hot and cold weather as well as UV protection, wood shutters are an energy-efficient window treatment. Blocking out UV rays protects furniture and hardwood floors from sun damage. They also offer a great degree of light control, adjusting rooms from completely opened to room darkening at the touch of a louver control rod.

Plantation shutters are custom fit to your windows. Even over-sized windows. French and sliding doors and odd shaped windows can be custom fit with shutters. Quality shutters retain a large portion of their value over time and can have an average lifespan well exceeding 35 years. The best news is they require very little maintenance! Just dust them periodically or wipe with a damp cloth.

If you are looking for a quality product that is a long-term investment, offers energy savings, UV protection, light control and adds appreciation to your resale value, you can’t go wrong with plantation shutters.
