How Windows Affect Your Paint Choices
Painting a room is a serious investment of both time and money so you want to be sure the color you choose is the right color. You have to consider what you want the room to feel like, how big you want it to appear, and what windows can do to your paint choice.
The first thing you have to remember is that natural light shows the truest color. So your blue will look very different in sunlight than lamp light or overhead light. Be sure to stand with your paint chips where the sunlight streams in to see if you still like your paint choices.
You’ll also want to do that several times a day. As the sun moves throughout the day, shadows shift and the look of color changes. The morning, for example, is a warmer light than the bluer light of noon – a light that tends to wash out most colors.
Another factor to consider is whether the room you’re painting sees sunlight from the north, south, east, or west. You may not think this makes a difference, but it does. North-facing rooms get less direct sunlight and are consistently cooler so you can feel free to use warmer color. Southern-facing rooms, on the other hand, get more light throughout the day. Colors will be intensified, and this room might benefit from shades or blinds. East rooms get their sunlight during the day, and west rooms get the most sun during the evening. Depending on what you plan to use the room for, you’ll want to evaluate the sunlight, time of day you’ll use the room, and what colors will offset the sun’s movement.
