In my November 2021 blog, I shared two of my favorite window treatment projects that had nothing to do with dressing windows and that got me excited about highlighting many more options for using window coverings beyond the window.

Do you have a home with an open floor plan and sometimes wish you had some cozier spaces? Hanging curtains on a drapery hardware track will do the trick. You could separate the living room from the dining area. Or create two rooms within a great room. That would be the perfect option if you’d like to carve out a quieter space to read a book next to the area where your kids are watching TV.

A lot of people are working from home these days and commandeering the kitchen table doesn’t always work, especially when you need some privacy during conference calls. Hanging drapery panels or vertical blinds in the corner of a large room would be a great way to solve the problem. You can open the blinds when you don’t need the privacy, but keep them closed if you have a cluttered desk. Ha ha!

This trick can also be used to hide less attractive areas too—like storage spaces. You can screen a washer and dryer, laundry hampers, garbage/recycling receptacles, toy boxes or any kind of organizational containers behind a hanging partition. Recently, we installed a motorized roller shade on a laundry closet opening to hide the washer and dryer—for when company visited, or any day when my clients just wanted the space to look tidier.

Studio apartments are the perfect place for curtain dividers. That way you can hide your bed–especially if you forgot to make it!

One of my favorite ways to add style to a room is to drape a bed in fabric, creating a canopy.

If you’d like a canopy in the primary bedroom but you’re a little claustrophobic, hanging a panel on each corner is enough to make a statement, or tying back the fabric can be simply stunning.

Let your imagination run free! And remember, I’m here to help you with all your “beyond the window” treatment needs. Just drop me a note at [email protected].
